There’s just no derailing Milton District’s quick-thinking theatrics.

Despite having four new members this season and losing coach Laurie Graham to injury for most of the first semester, the school’s improv team hardly missed a beat.

That was evidenced with a sixth-place finish at last week’s Canadian Improv Games’ national championships in Ottawa — just one spot back of MD’s 2014 showing.

“At first we were thinking that it was a miracle that we made it (to nationals) with all the adversity, but then once we got there we realized we’d earned it and deserved to be there,” said captain Brittney Marvell, whose team narrowly missed a berth to the five-team finale on Saturday — getting bumped by regional rival M.M. Robinson of Burlington, which eventually finished fourth. “There’s so many amazing teams out there and it feels great to know you’re at their level.”

With strong showings in all four categories — theme, story, style and life — MD once again surpassed the 900-point plateau in its fifth trip to nationals in the past six years.

While regulated to the role of spectators for the nationals’ finale, Graham stressed that the way the team persevered during her absence made this season particularly special.

“They just kept going and stepped up,” said the MD coach, who after breaking both her elbows during a nasty fall was replaced for semester one by alumnus Sydney Crowe and got further help from a few other former team members.

Among the newcomers to this season’s squad were ninth graders Jessika Johnson and Jen Foster, while also joining Marvell and fellow veterans Kevin Clark, Kyle Chaudhry, and Callum Fisher were Olivia Hill-Hanlan and Charlotte Ayan.
