Latest triumph comes in McGregor Cup West in Barrie

The 14-under Halton Region Volleyball Club Black team is busy preparing for the provincial and national championships. And for good reason.

The Hurricanes are on fire this season, winning five of six tournaments and earning a silver in the other, with two of the tournaments featuring 15U competition.

The latest gold came at the McGregor Cup Championship West in Barrie where the local club defeated the Georgian Cubs 14U Black team 19-25, 25-20, 15-4 in the championship match.

The team includes three players each from Burlington and Milton, two from Oakville and one each from Stoney Creek and Mississauga. Madison Bowles, Biamba Kabengele and Danielle Gravina are the Burlington athletes for the Hurricanes, which are coached by Adam Petrie and assistants Mike Ongley and Nicki Gravina.

The Hurricanes reached the finals of the Barrie tournament with a straight sets win over the Storm Avalanche.

The Hurricanes are considered strong contenders for both the provincial and national title this season. The nationals will be held in Calgary in May.

Other players on the team include Ana Strbac and Julia Jeffrey of Oakville, Corrin Anderson, Haley Armstrong and Marina Vesovic of Milton, Sofia Szechynski of Mississauga and Lindsay Adoranti of Stoney Creek.
