The sounds of the Beatles filled the air at the Mattamy Theatre February 15, 2014. Concert-goers were treated to a performance by Classic Albums live, as the group performed the famous Abbey Road album.

Released in September, 1969 Abbey Road was the final Beatles album ever recorded. Its cover was the iconic image of the group walking across the zebra crossing in front of the studios. It arrived on the British charts in October, 1969 at number 1 where it stayed for 17 of its 81 weeks on the charts. In the United States (U.S.) it spent 11 of 83 weeks at number one.

Classic Albums Live was founded by Craig Martin in 2003. Their purpose: to recreate entire rock albums in their entirety. Their catalog includes Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Rolling Stones. At the Mattamy they performed the Beatles’ Abbey Road exactly as it was performed by the Fab Four in 1969. The first half of the two-hour show covered the entire record from starting with Come Together, and ending with Her Majesty.

The album was different from the Beatles’ earlier work with a rock/psychedelic tone to it; a nod to the era as the sixties ended and the seventies began. “The last section of Abbey Road you know I still think is for me one of the finest pieces we put together,” Ringo Star says of the album. Paul McCartney felt it would be their last: “let’s just show ‘em what we can do, let’s show each other what we can do, and let’s try and have a good time.” The good time feeling came through on the album.

The second half felt more like a rock concert as the band performed universally loved Beatles classics including Hey Jude, Yesterday, and I Want to Hold Your Hand. People of all ages were in the audience demonstrating the timelessness of Beatles’ music, and their lasting influence on pop culture.
