Michael Ferrier wasn’t thinking about saving anyone’s life when he saw smoke billowing outside of a neighbour’s apartment just after midnight Wednesday.

But that’s just what he did. Lynn Todd calls her rescuer a “hero.”

“He saved my life,” she told the Champion Wednesday afternoon from her home on the third floor of the five-storey El Primos apartment building at 263 Ontario St. N. “You write something nice because he’s a good man.”

Ferrier said he was just doing “his neighbourly duty.”

He was outside on the balcony of the apartment above Todd’s. His friend, Kellie Willsher, said she smelled smoke. Ferrier looked down and saw smoke coming out of the woman’s sliding balcony doors.

Together with another friend, Brian Farrell, the three Miltonians rang the fire alarm, called 9-1-1, and ran downstairs.

Ferrier said he touched the apartment door and it wasn’t hot, so he tried it and it was open.

Inside he was shocked to see Todd asleep under a fire-engulfed blanket and couch. He threw the burning blanket outside and ran into the kitchen to find a pot to fill with water so he could douse the fire. He managed to put it out before the Milton Fire Department (MFD) arrived moments later.

Todd walked away from the incident shaken but unscathed.

“It was pretty intense,” Ferrier admitted.

MFD said careless smoking may be the cause of the fire, but they were not able to confirm that. There were working smoke alarms.
