The Halton/North Peel Naturalist Club will hold a swift-watching evening at St. Paul’s United Church Saturday, May 23.

The club invites people to bring a lawn chair, camera and binoculars to learn more about chimney swifts from 8 to 9:15 p.m. at the church, 123 Main St. E.

Chimney swifts have lived in southern Ontario towns for more than 100 years, but now they face an uncertain future. Small swallow-like birds, they have suffered alarming declines in recent decades due to habitat loss — they nest and roost in chimneys.

As chimneys are capped, or an old building is demolished, it can mean the loss of habitat for hundreds of swifts.

They’re considered a species at risk by the Canadian and Ontario governments.
